The goal of accommodation is to remove barriers so an employee remains productive and feels supported at work.

When creating accommodation plans, it’s important to follow human rights legislation and work together with the employee to create a plan that supports them to do their job successfully. The resources below include strategies to assist supervisors, managers and the employee throughout the accommodation process.

Policy and legal concerns

  • Accommodation and return to work policies. Strategies to better respond to employees returning to work or requiring accommodation. These can be helpful when mental health is a factor.
  • Discrimination prevention and inclusivity. Address discrimination and promote inclusivity through your policies and processes. This creates a safe environment and supports all employees to thrive and succeed.
  • Legal duty to accommodate. Most organizations have their own policies and procedures for accommodation. All should follow human rights legislation.
  • Specific areas of concern. A framework to help prevent discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, bullying, trauma, burnout and negative impacts to employee health and well-being.
